Mechanism of Action
  • Albendazole binds to the colchicine-sensitive site of β-tubulin inhibiting their polymerization into microtubules.
  • The decrease in microtubules in the intestinal cells of the parasites decreases their absorptive function, especially the uptake of glucose by the adult and larval forms of the parasites, and also depletes glycogen storage.
  • Insufficient glucose results in insufficient energy for the production of adenosine trisphosphate (ATP) and the parasite eventually dies.

  • Albendazole Tablets USP 400 mg
Indicated for
Ascaridiosis, Trichocephalosis, strongyloidosis and hookworm infestations
Enterobiasis, Capillariose, cysticercosis and skin migrans
Hydatic disease
Surgery as an adjunct treatment (either pre or post-operatory)
  • The usual dose for adults and children 2 years of age or older with ascaridiase (ascaris), hookworm infections, trichocephalus (trichocephalus) and skin migrans larva is 400 mg in single dose.
  • In strongyloides, 400mg is administered daily for 3 consecutive days. This can be spotted after 3 weeks if necessary.
  • In oxyuriasis (oxyures, nematode), children ages 2 years or older received a single dose of 100 mg repeated after 7 days.
  • The adult dose is 400 mg repeated after 7 days. In hydatic disease, the usual dose is 400mg twice per day for adults. This is mainly given for 28-day cycles with a range of Two weeks between cycles. The number of cycles is between 1 and 12, although three cycles may be sufficient for most cysts.
